Office Productivity and
Payback - The Holy Grail Discovered?
After 30 years of
research into the effects of Indoor Environment on occupants, there is
now intensive research and assessment of the effects of Indoor
Environment Quality (IEQ) on occupant productivity and payback
via life cycle cost analysis.
In the last year, Dr Vyt
Garnys of CETEC, attended the two major IEQ International Conferences,
namely, Indoor Air 2005 in Beijing and Healthy Buildings '06 in
Lisbon. It was confirmed to him and fellow attendees, that a
consensus has now been reached that - a better indoor climate creates better
productivity and improved wellbeing for the building occupants.
For example, in one study, relative performance was enhanced by 15% for a 7oC
reduction in temperature and that a 2% office productivity gain can
be worth $270/m2.
This has culminated in a
consensus European protocol representing 31 countries for
methods of measuring the financial benefit to organizations
of their improved IEQ by integrating productivity into life cycle cost
analysis of building services.
Dr Garnys previewed
these findings at a productivity workshop for
IIR's 4th Annual Green Buildings Conference on 28th
June in Sydney. CETEC is now using this methodology with
clients. We can assess the value of improving the
air quality, lighting and noise in your office, research or educational
environment.
