Cooling Tower Audits: Conflicts Of Interest

home :: services :: about :: contact

The team at CETEC would like to remind you that in Victoria your Cooling Tower Risk Management Plan (RM Plan) may be due for its annual audit. A number of national organisations are using the Victorian legislation as the current best practice model. So those in other states this may want to benchmark themselves against Australian best practice. CETEC can inform you further so please contact us here.

Your developed RM Plan must have an independent audit conducted three months prior to re-registration of your cooling tower system. Audits can only be conducted by someone who has been certified as an approved auditor by the Victorian Department of Human Services. To avoid conflicts of interest and ensure independence, your auditor should not be your water treatment company, nor the company or individual who performed your Risk Management Assessment (RM Assessment) or RM Plan.

CETEC has certified auditors, namely:

John Kruiskamp Environmental Engineering Consultant

Dr Vyt Garnys - Managing Director and Principal Consultant

The auditor is not required to visit the site or to inspect the cooling tower system. The audit is a 'paper audit', limited to verification that a risk management plan addresses the five critical risk areas and that it is being implemented in practice (via checking of copies of records provided to the auditor).

Prior to proceeding to the audit stage, don't forget to review and update your RM Plan. This must be done at least once a year, prior to the audit. This is to ensure that the risks identified in the original RM Assessment are being treated and that there is no increase of risk for the cooling tower system. If you would like assistance in a pre-audit review of your RM Plan, CETEC can assist.

Otherwise, if your RM Assessment and/or RM Plan was done by CETEC, and you would like us to recommend a suitable approved auditor, please contact us here.
