Earlier this month Dr Vyt Garnys and Phil Limberg both of CETEC attended the AIRAH (Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air-conditioning and Heating) solutions based Indoor Air Quality Conference in Sydney entitled "What's in your air?"

The keynote presenter was Clive Broadbent who presented on "SARS, WHO and IAQ - Lessons from Beijing". The multidisciplinary international team approach assisted with airborne infection control.

Other presenters included:

Ed Stuttard presented "What is toxic mould and what is its significance to IAQ". The characteristics of the key moulds were presented.

Chris Salmon spoke about "Building an IAQ monitoring program". The need for a specific analytical program for each site was highlighted.

Steve Kritzler discussed regulatory aspects of "Indoor Air Quality - a duty of care". Responsibility now rests with management to create a safe workplace.

David Jarratt and Matthew Jessup jointly presented "Displacement ventilation and issues relating to IAQ". Following extensive development in Europe, displacement ventilation is gradually being implemented in Australia.

Peter Mathieson led a discussion on "The New Horizon - Indoor Environment Quality" as part of the rating systems developed by the Green Building Council. Improvements were suggested by the audience.

Dr Vyt Garnys developed the case for a new term, "Facility Ecology - the holistic integrated approach". Productivity improvement and workplace relations require a wider, more effective approach, which recognises the physical facility environment and its interaction with the occupants. The complete presentation is available to view here.

Grahame Gibbs spoke about "Controlled Environments and IAQ - Fact and Fiction". His main concern was the need for AS1668 to have a better approach to smoking environments.

Jeremy Stamkos demonstrated "HVAC Hygiene" examples photographically and argued for adoption of a standardised, comprehensive form of contract for cleaning.

Welcoming and closing address were by Peter Taylor - National President - AIRAH. Overall, an excellent Conference.
