Water Conservation for Industry

This article provides a template or process for adopting a water conservation program for your business.  The benefits to your business include:

  • Lower water and energy bills;

  • Lower environmental risks;

  • Potential savings in chemical use and a more efficient overall process;

  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental performance and

  • Improved likelihood of meeting the future more stringent water usage requirements.

There are three main typical areas of achieving water savings found in industry:

  • Identifying and eliminating wastage (such as leaks) and inefficient processes  This may be the most low cost area for water savings, as it involves minimal capital outlay.

  • Changing processes and plant machinery. A retrofit or upgrade of key plant equipment may increase efficiency.

  • Reusing wastewater.  As well as saving on mains water, this option may reduce trade waste charges and associated environmental risks.  There are a number of innovative technologies available for the reuse of wastewater (grey and black).

You can best achieve your specific water savings by adopting a five-step process for improving water efficiency which involves:

  1. Appoint a water conservation team;

  2. Investigate how much water is being used around the site;

  3. Install water meters;

  4. Establish goals for water conservation and

  5. Develop and implement water saving initiatives.

Implementation of this strategy will help your company to identify the most cost effective options for water reduction and financial savings. While the best results will be achieved by implementing all 5 actions, they can also be adopted individually
